My Editing Experience

Similar to some of my fellow bloggers, I came to college with very little expeirence in the field of journalism. The was particularly the case with media and editing media. I knew that some bloggers such as Andrea had experience in high school (she wrote about it here http://scrippsfreshmen.wordpress.com/category/andrea/) and I too had taken a brief quarter long high school journalism class, but sometimes it doesn’t prepare you for what lies ahead.

In my Communication 103 (Speech and Rhetoric) course our final project was to produce video speech with pictures and a voice over. That was the first time I used iMovie, a very nerve-wrecking experience in which I referenced Google several hundred times! Eventually, I created a movie that contained pictures, some music and my voice laid overtop.

The above video is the one I made for my Communications course, it is a graduation speech for my younger brother.

During a meeting for Jumping Into Journalism, the editors from ImPRessions informed us that they thought it would be a great idea to create a video about Scripps Life. We all loved the idea and agreed to begin! It was a rocky start, because we all decided to split up to get the interviews in the amount of time we had. However, I wasn’t too worried because Brooke had experience with using final cut for JFreshman Newsroom (check out her blog about it http://scrippsfreshmen.wordpress.com/2010/12/05/brookes-jfreshmen-final/).

When all the bloggers got back together again we realized we were totally lost. Brooke had to leave early, so I volunteered to edit the video. A lot of guess and check work later I was able to maneuver my way around iMovie.

My Video on iMovie

Several hours later I finally had a workable video, It was really hard first figuring it out, but it is definitely not impossible for someone with fairly little experience to put together a movie using iMovie! The best part was the accomplished feeling I had once I exported the movie to YouTube, it had actually been pretty fun splicing different clips together.

I recommend to anyone thinking of going into journalism to become familiar with whatever video making software you have available, even if you just mess around making a graduation video (I did that..) because the more you know the easier it’ll be when you have to make a video like this!

This is the video I edited for the blog, it shows interviews with students about six different questions relating to Scripps.
